This is a book chapter containing an introduction to multilayer perceptrons. Some people might be especially interested in Sections C1.2.4.2 (Adaptive step sizes) and C1.2.4.3 (Robustness) which, together, describe the Adaptive Step Sizes Algorithm, which is a simple, yet very effective and robust method for accelerating the training of multilayer perceptrons – or, in fact, for accelerating any gradient-based optimization.
